New Delhi: The delivery ministry has initiated the inexperienced port challenge for lowering carbon emissions of the maritime trade that, excluding navy operations, contributes to 1% of the general transport sector emissions.
In a written reply to a query in Lok Sabha, Union Minister for Ports, Delivery and Waterways, Sarbananda Sonowal stated the challenge is aimed toward making the trade fuel-efficient, and a cleaner mode of transportation. The plan includes implementation of sustainable practices in terminal design, improvement and operation; preparation of surroundings administration and monitoring plan; regulation of the discharges and effluents within the harbor water and minimization by way of Swachh Bharat initiatives, massive plantation actions round port areas and so forth.
The utilization of renewable energy might be promoted for port actions by set up of solar energy crops, rooftop photo voltaic, wind farms, floating photo voltaic crops, and so forth.
In one other reply to the Lok Sabha, Sonowal stated a goal of 120 MMT (million metric tonne) has been set for 2024-25 beneath the Maritime India Imaginative and prescient (MIV), 2030 to be able to obtain the general goal of 200 MMT on Nationwide Waterways (NWs).
The estimated goal set for NW-2 and NW-16 for the yr 2024-25 are 0.60 MMT and 0.01 MMT respectively.

Complete improvement of Nationwide Waterway-2 by Inland Waterways Authority of India has been authorised by the federal government at a value of Rs. 461 crore.
